What to Do While Waiting for a Nursing Home? Make Good Use of Community Respite Care, Day Care Centres, and Home-Based Rehabilitation Services to Save Money and Effort

The average waiting time for government-subsidised nursing homes is two to three years, leaving caregivers with unspoken stress. In fact, during the waiting period you don't have to simply wait idly. A wide range of community care services can help with the transition, saving you money and effort while allowing the elderly person to keep their place on the waiting list. It is not an either‑or choice.

Day care centres are the top choice for support. During the day, the elderly receive rehabilitation exercises, blood pressure monitoring, meals, and personal care at the centre, then return home to be with family in the evening. The cost is only HK$41.5 per day – nearly 30 times cheaper than a nursing home – placing a very small financial burden on the family. If the caregiver has temporary commitments or needs a rest, you can apply for elderly day respite services. Vacant places in under‑utilised facilities can flexibly provide short‑term daytime care. Simply call the Carer Support Hotline 182 183, and a social worker will immediately match you with a service point and help you apply for transport subsidies. The Social Welfare Department has also greatly expanded the number of locations offering day respite services to more than 300, with daytime fees as low as HK$21 per session.

If you need professional rehabilitation support, you can use the Community Care Service Voucher for the Elderly to access home‑based rehabilitation services. Elderly persons holding a Community Voucher can receive up to 95% government subsidy, paying as little as HK$219 per month for services worth over HK$4,000.

Physiotherapists or occupational therapists visit the home to provide rehabilitation training and home environment assessments, improving mobility and preventing falls. Many non‑governmental organisations also directly offer home‑based rehabilitation services, which can be hired on an hourly basis even without a Community Voucher.

Most importantly, these community care services do not affect the elderly person's place on the nursing home waiting list. Simply inform the social worker that you want to be classified as an "inactive case". When you stop using the services, your original position on the list is restored without needing to re‑apply. Make good use of government and welfare resources early – you will save money and ensure the elderly can age safely in place.
