Many caregivers who look after elderly people over long periods silently endure tremendous stress while overlooking their own burnout warning signs. Recognising emotional exhaustion is the first step to self-help. Below are four major warning signs to watch for.
Physical signs: Feeling tired even after adequate rest, insomnia, or changes in appetite. Nearly 60% of Hong Kong caregivers suffer from poor sleep quality.
Emotional signs: Easily becoming irritable or anxious, overreacting to small matters, or feeling depressed and hopeless.
Mental signs: Persistent negativity and frustration, a decline in the quality of care provided, or even a sense of powerlessness.
Social signs: Gradually distancing yourself from family and friends, or even feeling guilty for spending time on yourself.
If you experience three or more of these warning signs, take action immediately.
Seeking respite care services is an effective way to take a break. Day respite services do not require a standardised assessment – you can apply directly at over 300 service points. Call the 24-hour Carer Support Hotline 182 183, and social workers can provide immediate matching and assist with transport subsidy applications. Day respite costs as little as HK$21 per session. The "Carer Support" scheme provides trained substitute carers who can come to your home, allowing you to rest regularly.
You too deserve to be embraced. Being kind to yourself is the best way to protect your family.
