Fall prevention for the elderly starts with home safety! Whether you live in a public housing estate or a private building, there are corresponding subsidies to help install handrails, ramps, and carry out bathroom modifications. The Hong Kong Housing Authority (HKHA) will carry out free unit modification works for elderly or disabled public housing tenants upon request, including installing metal ramps at entrances, widening bathroom doorways, laying anti-slip floor tiles, converting bathtubs into walk-in showers, adding handrails in bathrooms, and raising balcony levels. If only handrails or a walk-in shower are needed in the bathroom, the Housing Authority can make arrangements directly without requiring a doctor's certificate.
For elderly owners of private buildings, they can apply for the Urban Renewal Authority's "Home Renovation Subsidy Scheme for People in Need." Eligible persons aged 60 or above who meet the income limits can receive a subsidy of up to HK$80,000 for works within their self-occupied unit, including improving accessible pathways and installing handrails. Applicants can submit documents online or in person at the URA's office, and approval must be completed before work commences.
In addition, the Community Care Fund also provides a one‑off fall prevention support subsidy for elderly in need, covering the installation of handrails, replacement of mattresses, and purchase of anti-slip slippers. Make good use of the above home modification subsidies to create a safe and secure home for the elderly early on, effectively preventing falls!
