Prevention and Coping Strategies for Common Caregiver Ailments: Back Pain, Insomnia, and Depression

Long-term care for family members often leads caregivers to neglect their own health. When a caregiver’s well-being declines, the three most common issues are back pain, insomnia, and depression. Learning to prevent and manage these problems is essential for sustaining the caregiving journey.

Preventing back pain: When lifting or assisting a care recipient, remember to “bend your knees, not your back.” Make good use of transfer belts or slide sheets. Perform daily back stretching exercises and use lumbar support to effectively relieve muscle fatigue.

Improving insomnia: Establish a consistent daily routine and avoid screens for one hour before bedtime. Try diaphragmatic breathing or meditation to relax. If necessary, consult a doctor about sleep aids or supplements such as magnesium or GABA.

Preventing depression: Caregivers often fall into self-blame and isolation. Take the initiative to join caregiver support groups, practice positive psychology techniques, and make full use of respite services. Remember: “Take care of yourself first, then you can take care of your loved one.”
