Elderly Home Safety Guide: Fall Prevention Modifications, Personal Emergency Alarm Installation, and Government Subsidy Application Strategies

In Hong Kong, it is common for the elderly to have accidents at home, with the risk of falls being the highest. To achieve aging in place, conducting a proper home safety assessment and making necessary modifications is crucial.

Fall Prevention Home Modifications: Small Changes, Big ProtectionHome modifications for the elderly should follow the "barrier-free" principle: install grab bars in toilets and bathrooms, use non-slip mats, and ensure walkways are clear and unobstructed. Occupational therapists can provide home safety assessment services and offer modification suggestions based on the elderly's needs, such as installing sensor lights or removing door thresholds. According to fee references, a professional home safety assessment costs approximately HKD $982 per hour.

Personal Emergency Alarm and Smart Detection Systems: 24/7 ProtectionTraditional personal emergency alarms allow the elderly to actively press a button for help when an incident occurs. The new generation of smart accident detection systems goes a step further. Using millimeter-wave radar and AI analysis, they can automatically detect falls. Even if the elderly person loses consciousness and cannot press the button, the system will proactively contact a 24-hour support center, where staff can immediately confirm the situation through two-way communication. Some systems are also equipped with location tracking features, which are particularly useful for elderly

individuals with dementia.

The HKEX Charity Fund recently allocated HKD $50 million to launch the "Caregiver Care Scheme," subsidizing approximately 500 high-risk elderly households with free installation of a smart detection system for 24 months. Eligible families can inquire with non-governmental organizations.

Government Subsidy Application GuideIn addition to the pilot scheme mentioned above, the elderly can also apply for the Community Care Service Voucher to help cover expenses. The voucher operates on a "money-follows-the-user" model and covers services such as home safety assessment and improvement advice, rehabilitation exercises, and personal care. Eligible seniors must have undergone the "Standardized Care Need Assessment" for the elderly and be on the Central Waiting List. Co-payment amounts are divided into six tiers (5% to 40%). Those with financial difficulties can pay as little as HKD $223 per month to access services worth up to HKD $10,664.

Application Channels: Inquiries and applications can be made at District Elderly Community Centres or Neighbourhood Elderly Centres. SWD approval generally takes about 4 weeks.

From home modifications to smart technology, and then to government subsidies, as long as resources are used wisely, the elderly can live safely and comfortably in the home they know.
